Lucian Plessner, biography
Lucian Plessner is one of the very few guitarists worldwide, who have managed to establishthemselves internationally in the recent years. He has performed from San Francisco to Moscow,
and has played in prestigious concert halls like the Musikhalle Hamburg, and the Konzerthaus
Vienna. From 1996 on he has been invited to Moscow six times to events such as the
"Ernst Lubitsch Retrospective" at the Film Museum, where he accompanied the silent film
"Carmen" live, or the Festival "Moscow Autumn" where he performed exclusively contemporary music.
In St. Petersburg he gave the first solo recital ever in the famous Smolny Cathedral.
Lucian Plessner, encouraged and authorized by the great master himself, created a sensation with his
arrangements of music by Leonard Bernstein, featuring pieces from West Side Story, MASS and
others for solo guitar.
In 1994 he performed this repertoire for Lord Yehudi Menuhin in person at his birthday celebration.
In the same year he appeared in international festivals such as the "Kfar Blum Chambermusic
Festival, Israel", and the "Settimani Musicali di Stresa e del Lago Maggiore" where he shared the
platform with renowned artists like Vladimir Ashkenazy, Shlomo Mintz and Mstislav Rostropowich.
As a resident in Andalusia (1982-1987), he earned international attention, when a Spanish concert agency
arranged a country-wide concert tour of guitar recitals for him-a remarkable tribute for a foreign virtuosto.
Alexis Weissenberg recommended him to Alicia de Larrocha, with whom he worked on his entire
Spanish concert repertoire.
Der Mannheimer Morgen wrote about Lucian Plessner:
"Guitar Magic - only a guitar, but what an artist! You met an artist, whose infinite skill is to never
strain for effect…intensification above all, even when his fingers rush breathtakingly over the
fingerboard. The comparison with Segovia is evident. (24.11.1997)
With his unconventional concert programs Lucian Plessner represents highly original interpretations to
the music world.
